Why is Awa Mountain so special?
In the southwest border areas of China, a mysterious Wa nationality live in the depths of the beautiful Awa Mountain, mainly located in the Pu’er and Lincang Cities. Primitive villages scatter all over the rolling hills and Wa people still preserve their old customs and cultures. This seems like an ideal world with beautiful scenery and tranquil environment. Fascinated by the Sea Cloud, the original Wengding Village, the Heavenly Lake and the Cliff Mural in Cangyuan Wa Autonomous County, a great many tourists come here every year.
Where is Awa Mountain?
Plan a trip to the Cloud Sea Wonders of Awa Mountain? Cangyuan Awa Mountain Scenic Spot is located in Cangyuan Awa Autonomous County, Lincang, sharing 147.78 km boundary line with Myanmar. This area consists of 6 parts, such as Menglai, Nangunhe, Mengdong, Lamenghe, Banlie, and Mengsheng- Mangka south tour route. There are total 199 scenic spots, covering an area of 147.34 sq.km.
What to see in Awa Mountain
Sea Cloud
Although it is cloudy in the morning in Cangyuan County, visitors can enjoy the splendid Cloud Sea Wonders, when they walk to the mountains with a rising elevation. Driving along the road from Cangyuan County to Yonghe Port, visitors will be amazed by the view, as it is sunny in the morning, they can have an overview of all the clouds . A patch of sunlight is rising in the morning, the mountains as well as the clouds are plated with gold. The sky is becoming more and more bright, the Cloud Sea Wonders will last about 1 or 2 hours then it will fade away. When the clouds begin to spread, it is just like a peninsula stretching to the sea, finally it just look like Lugu lake. The charming Cloud Sea Wonders of Awa Mountain is waiting for you to experience.
When the sun comes out, the clouds become colorful and gorgeous. They are like the rolling waves on the open space, while at the the narrow pass, they are just like the elegant white silk. Some peaks stand in the sky piercing the clouds, they are like the unearthed bamboo shoots, drifting away on the mountainside, they look like the sampans, rippling on the sea waves. Near the noon time, the temperature is rising, and all the clouds start to roll and flush, making the mountains and cloud sea flickering, as far as the visitors can see, the scenery is so splendid. The Cloud Sea Wonders of Awa Mountain came into being in the midnight, then fade away till 11 a.m. the next day. Paying a visit to the Cloud Sea Wonders of Awa Mountain from Mengkan, visitors will get a more grand sight. Milk-white clouds are so changeable, sometimes they are like a fine gauze covering the villages, at times they seem to be the rolling waves patting shore side, sometimes they look like the waterfalls falling directly to the pool, at times they are like the flying cotton catkin. The clouds of Awa Mountain are so changeable and spectacular. After the clouds disappearing the bamboo of the Awa Mountain, terraces, pine trees, banana trees, and the villages with bamboo house reappear in the lofty mountains, seeming to be more beautiful. Heavenly Lake
The Heavenly Lake, a nature reserve, is situated on the top of the mountain, with the altitude of 2,000m (6,562ft). It’s formed due to the rainfall and a spring on the top of the mountain. The limpid water makes fascinating scenery together with the nice surroundings.
Wengding Village – A Primitive Village of Wa Nationality
The Wengding Village is situated in the Cangyuan Wa Autonomous County preserving some old customs and cultures, such as ‘pulling the wooden drum’ and ‘bullfighting’. It is the last primitive village of China, and is regarded to be the cultural capital of the Wa nationality. The Wa people live in bamboo stilt-houses with grass roofs. The Awa Mountain’s totem, genitals and flagpole of Theravada, stand tall and upright in the only flat ground of the village. Many terrified ox heads hang from peg stakes around the original village as ox are considered sacred by Wa nationals.
In Cangyuan Wa Autonomous County, tourists can also visit the Guangyun Buddhist Temple, the great holy object of Wa nationality – a hundred-year wooden drum, the mysterious cliff painting engraved 3,000 years ago. In addition, the natural scenery here offers many picturesque views, including tropical rainforest, omniform woods constituted by a tree, green wild plants, charming virgin forest park along with high mountains and clear lakes.
