The “Diannan Shengjing Archway” (滇南胜境坊) is located in Fuyuan County (富源) of Qujing (曲靖), Yunnan Province (云南省). This impressive archway was built in the fourth year of the Jingtai period during the Ming Dynasty (明代), standing at a height of 13.32 meters and a width of 11.2 meters. The arch features three openings—two small and one large—aligned like three characters of “门” (door), through which the ancient postal route runs from east to west, extending into the distance.
The main inscription “Diannan Shengjing” (滇南胜境) shines brightly in gold letters on a grand plaque embedded at the top of the archway, visible from three to four kilometers away. Up close, one can observe a pair of vividly detailed stone lions on either side of the arch’s pillars, facing toward Yunnan and Guizhou. The lions facing Guizhou are covered in green moss, while those facing Yunnan are adorned with red earth. This creates a fascinating depiction of the climatic boundaries between the two provinces, providing valuable data for meteorological research.
Many poets and scholars have marveled at this natural wonder, including Mr. Yang Sheng’an, who wrote about the unique separation of weather patterns in his work. The natural scenery around the archway has captivated visitors for generations, making it a significant cultural landmark.
The name “Diannan” historically referred to Yunnan, derived from its geographical position in southern China. “Shengjing” means a beautiful place, hence the title “Diannan Shengjing” signifies the stunning landscapes of Yunnan.
The scenic area surrounding the archway showcases breathtaking landscapes. The terrain features a small stream flowing northward, with the soil on either side distinctly different in color: the eastern bank is dark reddish-brown, while the western side is reddish-brown, creating a striking visual effect.
Historically, Fuyuan was known as “the first state of Yunnan.” The area has served as an essential route for travelers moving between Yunnan and Guizhou, making the archway a vital historical checkpoint. Various significant figures and cultural icons have passed through, leaving a rich legacy behind.
To reach Diannan Shengjing Archway, take National Highway 320 (320国道) from Qujing City toward Fuyuan County. Follow the signs for Shengjing Pass; the archway is located near the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces.

Laibin Dragon Cave (Lái bīn lóng dòng, 来宾龙洞) is located 25 kilometers north of Laibin Township (来宾乡) in Xuanwei City (宣威市), Qujing City (曲靖市), Yunnan Province (云南省). It lies over 30 kilometers from the city center. The cave is a limestone karst formation, showcasing unique and breathtaking features that make it a notable scenic spot. The cave extends 760 meters, with a waterway of 128 meters and a depth of approximately 500 meters, accommodating more than 200 visitors at a time. Within the cave, the “Dragon King Treasure Hall” (龙王宝殿) serves as a spacious chamber covering several dozen square meters.
The Laibin Dragon Cave is characterized by its karst topography, containing multiple limestone formations. Recently, while excavating a service area within the scenic zone, workers discovered potential animal bones amidst the rocky layers.
During the excavation, they uncovered a red earth surface and massive limestone rocks. At a depth of over 2 meters, a narrow white line was observed, which turned out to be fragmented animal bones, including leg bones and vertebrae.
Among the unidentified animal bones collected by the staff, the largest measured approximately 15-20 centimeters in diameter, while the smallest was about 5-6 centimeters. Some of the bones showed clear signs of marrow. Notably, there were also teeth-like bones measuring around 5 centimeters in width and exceeding 5 centimeters in length, suggesting they belong to an unusual animal. The excavation of this area has concluded, pending identification by animal experts.
According to a staff member named Xu (徐), similar unidentified animal bones were found in the cave a few years ago. Experts from the Xuanwei City Cultural Heritage Management Office (宣威市文管所) have initially suggested that these bones belong to large herbivores, with further investigation needed to determine the specific species. They mentioned that remains of rhinoceros-like herbivores have previously been excavated in the area.
Inside the cave, the stalactites predominantly hang from the ceiling and walls, creating a precarious atmosphere. The ground is adorned with terraced fields, stone mills, and stone cities, resembling a picturesque rural landscape. Notably, a lion-like rock formation watches over the cave entrance, evoking a sense of guardianship.
The Dragon King’s Palace (龙王宫殿) features a lifelike sculpture of the Dragon King and Dragon Mother, making it an essential highlight of the Dongshan Scenic Area (东山风景名胜区). Outside the cave, lush green mountains and flowing waters create a serene ambiance, while inside, the sound of springs and the translucent stalactites conjure images of mythical creatures.
A striking stone curtain approximately 15 meters long appears like a waterfall cascading from above, creating a spectacular scene reminiscent of the Milky Way. The “Fairy Tree Yao Platform” (仙树瑶台) presents an enchanting atmosphere that captivates visitors, as if ethereal music is drifting from afar. Strolling through the cave reveals a changing landscape with every step, presenting endless beauty.
Upon entering the cave, visitors will encounter various stalagmites and stalactites. One section is rumored to be the quarry where Nuwa (女娲) sourced materials to mend the sky, with towering, eerie rock formations resembling pathways and furnaces.
Dragon Cave Village (龙洞村) is located in the northern part of Laibin Town (来宾镇), approximately 40 kilometers from Xuanwei City, making transportation relatively inconvenient.
