Shusong Nunnery (Shusong Nunnery, 书松尼姑寺) is a Gelug (格鲁) sect monastery located in Shusong Village, Benzilan Township, Deqin County (德钦县), Diqing Prefecture (迪庆州), Yunnan Province (云南省). This prominent nunnery serves as a significant spiritual center for the nuns of Deqin, Weixi, and Zhongdian, making it a crucial place of worship and meditation.
The exact founding date of Shusong Nunnery remains unclear, but it was originally established on the site of Dongzhulin Monastery (东竹林寺) in 1772 during the Qing Dynasty under the initiative of the third Zatang Living Buddha (扎塘活佛). During the Cultural Revolution, the nunnery suffered destruction and was relocated to its current site. Today, it houses dozens of nuns and hosts various religious events, while most nuns engage in productive labor outside the monastery, returning only occasionally to perform religious duties.
The nunnery is known for its historical significance. Its original name, Tabalin (塔巴林), means “Garden of Liberation.” Initially lacking qualified teachers, the nunnery saw a transformation when two women, believed to be incarnations of celestial beings, sought to become nuns. The third Zatang Living Buddha later took charge, solidifying the nunnery’s status within the Dongzhulin Monastery.
Shusong Nunnery features a newly constructed main hall and several facilities that reflect its growing importance. The main hall is adorned with a significant collection of Buddhist statues and exquisite murals dating back to the Qing Dynasty. These murals, created with mineral pigments, depict various Buddhist figures and have remained vibrant for over 200 years, showcasing the artistic and cultural heritage of the region.
As of May 2023, the nunnery continues to thrive, supported by government funding and community involvement. With the nunnery’s population reaching over 130 nuns, the facilities have improved significantly, including new dormitories, kitchens, and meeting rooms. The nuns engage in daily religious practices and community service, emphasizing the integration of traditional teachings with contemporary needs.
To reach Shusong Nunnery, travel along National Highway 214 and follow the newly paved roads leading to Shusong Village. The nunnery is situated a few kilometers uphill, offering scenic views of the surrounding mountains.
Zhongxinzhen Gongtang (中心镇公堂) is located in Moonlight Square (月光广场) of Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城) in Shangri-La (香格里拉), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). The Tibetan name “Duke Ruiba Xiakang” translates to “Stone Village Tibetan Scripture Hall.” Established in the 21st year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign (1682), it covers an area of over 4,000 square meters and serves as a venue for ancestral worship, meetings, and handling marriage and funeral ceremonies for the local Tibetan community.
Zhongxinzhen Gongtang consists of a main hall, east and west wings, a main gate, surrounding walls, and four corner watchtowers. The main hall features a Han-style three-tiered roof and a Tibetan-style interior layout, reflecting the fusion of diverse cultural influences. The walls of the main hall and the inner walls of the second floor are adorned with nearly 200 square meters of Tibetan Buddhist murals, showcasing the artistic skills of the late Qing Dynasty and the aesthetic preferences of the Tibetan people.
The main hall faces south and is a two-story building with a wooden structure and a three-tiered roof covered in Han-style blue tiles. The hall is supported by 40 Tibetan-style Vajra pillars arranged in a square layout, with two central pillars reaching a height of 16 meters. Inside, a statue of Avalokiteshvara (观音) with a thousand hands and eyes is enshrined, with Tibetan scripture cabinets flanking it.
In 1931, when the town faced bandit attacks, local self-defense forces bravely defended Zhongxinzhen Gongtang for 34 days, protecting valuable artifacts and the lives of local residents.
On May 3, 1936, the Red Army convened the Zhongdian Conference in the hall, outlining seven political disciplines to respect the rights and customs of Tibetan people.
Zhongxinzhen Gongtang’s Tibetan Buddhist murals are rich in composition, color coordination, and thematic diversity, representing late Qing ethnic artistic skills. The preservation and study of these murals contribute significantly to cultural heritage conservation.
Zhongxinzhen Gongtang is situated in Moonlight Square (月光广场), Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城), Shangri-La (香格里拉), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省).
Shusong Village (书松村, Shū sōng cūn) is located in Benzilan Town (奔子栏镇, Bēnzǐlán zhèn), within Deqin County (德钦县, Déqīn xiàn) in Yunnan Province (云南省, Yúnnán shěng). This village is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, traditional Tibetan architecture, and rich cultural heritage. Situated near the confluence of the Mekong River (湄公河, Méigōng hé), Shusong offers visitors a serene environment surrounded by majestic mountains and lush valleys.

Yana Qingbo (亚那青波) is one of the best pastoral areas in the Jiantong (建瑭) region of Shangri-La (香格里拉), situated on the slopes of Shika Snow Mountain (石卡雪山). Travelers heading to Shika Snow Mountain must pass through Yana Qingbo Pasture.
Yana Qingbo Pasture is at an elevation of 3,746 meters. The pasture is surrounded by dense alpine willow shrubbery, mixed forests dominated by mountain oaks, and rhododendron bushes. The western hillside is home to a lush, primeval forest of long-cone firs. From the summit of Shika Snow Mountain, the entire pasture resembles a green gem embedded in the forest. In July and August, the meadows are covered with leaves resembling banana leaves, known locally as “guyuhua” (酥油花), which perfectly complement the elegant, umbrella-shaped willow trees, adding an endless poetic charm to Yana Qingbo Pasture. This pasture is famous for its high-quality grass, resulting in premium butter and cheese from the local yaks (耗牛).
Yana Qingbo Pasture is located on the slopes of Shika Snow Mountain, and visitors must take a cable car to reach the summit. It is one of the better pastures in the area, known for its high-quality grass and robust yaks. Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy autumn, but I plan to return in the summer when I have the time.
Despite winter having arrived and the grass turning yellow, many yaks are still seen grazing. This area has been inhabited by Tibetan people (藏民) for centuries, with small wooden cabins scattered throughout.
In the small wooden cabins, we tasted homemade yak milk (牦牛奶) and roasted yak meat (烤牦牛肉). The milk was rich and creamy, while the meat was delicious. At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate it, but later I found myself longing to try it again. I wonder if the elderly owners will still be around years later, and whether the taste will remain as pure.
We visited in April, when the snow on the mountaintop had not yet completely melted, and the pasture grass was not in full bloom. The guesthouse owner mentioned that it becomes especially beautiful when the entire area is covered in flowers around May and June. We booked our tickets through the guesthouse for 180 yuan per person, which included entrance fees, a round-trip cable car ride, and transportation from the hotel to the scenic area.
The cable car service is divided into two segments: the first segment goes from the base of the mountain to the mid-level pasture, while the second segment takes you from the mid-level pasture to the summit. Yana Qingbo Pasture sits at an elevation of about 3,800 meters, and it’s advisable to rest here for a while to acclimate before ascending to the summit, which is over 4,000 meters high to avoid altitude sickness (高反). Our visit was not at the ideal time, as the pasture grass was sparse and not much was blooming, but we did spot many unique local black pigs (小黑猪). For the best experience at the big pasture, it’s recommended to visit after May, although the mountaintop will be snow-free then.
This stunning location offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Happy travels! ???

The Badong Catholic Church (巴东天主教堂) is located in Badong Village (巴东村) within Yanmen Township (燕门乡), Deqin County (德钦县), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). This church is a branch of the Cizhong Catholic Church (茨中教堂) and was constructed between 1910 (the second year of the Xuantong era in the Qing Dynasty) and 1919 (the eighth year of the Republic of China).
Before the establishment of the church, in the 20th year of the Guangxu era (光绪二十年), French missionaries were granted permission by the Qing court to set up a base in Badong for missionary activities. By 1950, the church had a tile-roofed building for worship and a residence for the clergy, which later served as a primary school following the liberation.
In 1984, after obtaining government approval, the church was returned to the local Christian community, leading to the resumption of religious activities.
The Badong Catholic Church features a traditional architectural style common in early 20th-century Catholic churches in China. The building is characterized by:
The Xiaoweixi Catholic Church (小维西天主教堂), also known as the Sacred Heart Church (圣心堂), is located in Xiaoweixi Village (小维西村) within the Baijixun Township (白济讯乡) of Weixi Lisu Autonomous County (维西傈僳族自治县), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). Established in the sixth year of the Guangxu era (1880 AD), it took one year to complete. Covering an area of approximately 6 acres, the church features a main hall surrounded by front and back courtyards, as well as gardens and vegetable plots.
The Xiaoweixi Catholic Church was built under the guidance of foreign missionary Ding Deliang (丁德良) in 1881. Before the liberation, it housed a church-run primary school with over 60 students. The church also provided medical services and sheltered elderly individuals with disabilities. Religious activities ceased during the Cultural Revolution (文化大革命), but in 1984, policies allowed the church to be returned to the congregation, which led to a revival of activities. The county government provided funding for renovations starting in 1985, turning it into the center for Catholic activities in Weixi County.
In 1989, it was designated as a cultural heritage site of Weixi County, and in 2012, it was further recognized as a cultural heritage site of Diqing Prefecture. The protected area spans 1966.38 square meters.
The church complex is symmetrically arranged along a central axis, featuring the main entrance, the Sacred Heart Church, dormitories for male and female students, classrooms, an elderly care facility, a pharmacy, storage rooms, and a dining hall, alongside a vineyard, orchard, and garden. Despite historical challenges, the main structure, the Sacred Heart Church, remains well-preserved.
The Xiaoweixi Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic church in Weixi County and Diqing Prefecture that is well-preserved. The church’s compact structure, decorative ridge carvings, and elegant craftsmanship represent a rare blend of Chinese temple architecture and Western church features. Its unique design embodies the typical Bahteli style of church architecture.
The church stands as a crucial physical evidence of the famous Weixi Catholic incident during the late Qing Dynasty, providing valuable insights into the history of Catholicism in the region. This architectural gem not only holds significant historical and artistic value but also serves as an important site for the study of local religious culture and customs.
