The annual gruelling bicycle race Tour de France (French pronunciation: [tuʁ də fʁɑ̃s]) is, as the name implies, primarily held in France. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 1903 — except when it was stopped for the two World Wars. As one of the world’s biggest sporting events, it has been described as “the world’s most prestigious and most difficult bicycle race”. Now, a stage of the official Tour de France — ‘étape’ — is coming to Yunnan. Fuxian Lake will be the setting of the race.
The Tour de France Challenge (L’ETAPE) is highly regarded by global cycling enthusiasts for its renowned closed track setting and the authentic experience of the long-distance cycling challenge of the Tour de France. After 15 world championships (France, the United Kingdom and the United States and more) the final battle of the 2019 season will start on December 14th at Chengjiang, on the shores of Fuxian Lake. This is the first time that the Tour de France arrives in southwest China — previous ‘étapes’ have been held in Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and Zhuji. It is also the last chance for China to compete for the 2020 Global Tournament World Championships.
Chengjiang County is located some 50 kilometers from Kunming and boasts excellent advantages for cycling: a good ecological environment, a profound historical and cultural heritage, tourism infrastructure. The biggest draw is, of course, the crystal clear Fuxian Lake. With its unique climatic conditions and natural landscape, it is popular with local and visiting outdoor sports fans.
This Tour de France ‘étape’ promises to be a challenging one, thanks to the highland topography of Fuxian Lake. In line with the venerable Tour de France road cycling event, a sophisticated event with a professional organisation and authentic atmosphere — including the famous Tour de France ‘marketing caravan’ — will surely entertain all riders and fans.
The Tour de France experts have designed a challenging and fun-filled track following the lake, with an altitude range from 1416 meters to 2123 meters and a total altitude gain of 2200 meters for the full 115 kilometer race. More than 27 kilometers of the race will be uphill. For riders not used to high altitudes and the local climate, these could prove to be extra challenges to be overcome during the race. It is the most challenging stage in the L’Etape China Series so far.
Apart from indulging in a passion for cycling, this challenge will allow the racers to experience another kind of journey. The track combines characteristics of the plateau and the mountains, and the panorama is part of the cultural history of Chengjiang.
The natural landscape shows the beautiful scenery of Fuxian Lake. Starting from Chengjiang County, cyclists enter the Fuxian Lake Scenic Area, pass through the Moon Bay Wetland Park, to the Yuxi Xianhu Timewalk, follow a beautiful stretch of 28 kilometers to the quiet Haikou Xianhu Bay Scenic Area and loop back to Chengjiang.
All of this beauty will be heightened, by experiencing and overcoming the harsh challenges of sore muscles, technical problems and psychological barriers.
Personal limits will be further teased and tested by the knowledge that a true Tour de France champion will attend: Marcel Kittel is the Tour de France ambassador for L’ETAPE Chengjiang.
Date: December 14th and 15th.
Location: Chengjiang, Fuxian Lake.
The early bird registration for this event launched on September 17th.
There will be two races: A 115 kilometer full course (with a registration limit of 1,500) and the 29 kilometer short distance (with a registration limit of 500). The early bird registration fees for both races are 318 RMB and 80 RMB respectively.
It is worth mentioning that the top 10 percent of Chengjiang L’ETAPE results will win the opportunity to advance to the 2020 World Cup in the Tour de France in Nice, the only channel to the World Championships in France for domestic riders.

Zhukula Coffee in Bingchuan County, Dali(宾川朱苦拉咖啡) is from Zhukula Village in Binchuan County of Dali. Zhukula(朱苦拉) is a word in Yi language and literally means “winding paths”. Located in Pingchuan Township, west Yunnan’s Bingchuan County, the Zhukula Village is 600 kilometers away from Kunming.
The history of coffee cultivation in Zhukula Village, Binchuan County, Yunnan Province, dates back over one hundred years. The introduction of coffee to Zhukula began in 1904 when French Catholic missionary Tian De Neng brought Vietnamese coffee seeds to the village. Since then, the villagers have developed a tradition of planting and drinking coffee. Today, Zhukula Village boasts 1,134 ancient coffee trees, with 24 of them over 100 years old, making it the origin of Chinese coffee. The villagers have preserved traditional methods of coffee processing, including picking, drying, and shelling, which are considered the most complete preservation of coffee culture in China.
Zhukula Village is located in Binchuan County, Dali, Yunnan Province, in the transition zone between the Central Yunnan Plateau and the West Yunnan Mountains. Positioned in the hot valley on the south bank of the Jinsha River, the area spans coordinates 25°32′—26°12′N and 100°16′—100°59′E. It is bordered to the east by Dayao County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and to the west by Eryuan County, Dali. The land area covers 2,562.67 square kilometers, with mountains accounting for 83.34% and dam areas 16.66%. The primary rivers include the Naxi River, Pingchuan River, Duobeijing River, and Qingshui River, all of which flow into the Jinsha River. The main tributary length is 304.6 kilometers, with a drainage area of 2,518.56 square kilometers.
Zhukula Coffee is known for its thick yet non-bitter flavor, fragrant aroma without being greasy, and a slight fruity sourness. The ancient coffee forest in Zhukula is unique, being the only agricultural form in China and even the world that was introduced to a barren, dry, and hot valley and has been cultivated for over 100 years. In 1981, Professor Ma Xijin, a tropical crop expert, confirmed that Zhukula Coffee belongs to Yunnan Arabica Coffee, specifically the oldest and purest Bourbon Tepika breed. It features Tepika varieties (31% of red-top plants) and Bourbon varieties (69% of green-top plants).
As of 2012, Zhukula Coffee was cultivated in six local villages with an annual production of nearly 14 tons, yielding an average income of over 7,000 yuan. By 2017, the coffee planting area in Binchuan County had expanded to over 8,000 acres.
To celebrate and share the rich history of Zhukula Coffee, the Yunnan Provincial Museum opened the Hundred-Year-Old Zhukula Coffee Museum in Kunming on September 6. This museum showcases the story of Zhukula Coffee and includes a café for visitors to enjoy the historic brew. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday every week.
If you are passionate about coffee, don’t miss the chance to taste the oldest coffee in Chinese Mainland—Zhukula Coffee. Visit the museum to explore its storied past and savor a cup of this unique and historic coffee.

Gaoligong International Fine Coffee Cultural Park is located in the southwest part of Longyang District, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, within the Lujiangba Ecotourism Area of the Gaoligong Mountains. It serves as a crucial node on Yunnan’s western tourist route. The area where the park is situated has a long history of cultivating Baoshan Small-grain Coffee, characterized by its unique geographical and climatic environment, making it one of the world’s premium coffee regions. In December 2010, “Baoshan Small-grain Coffee” received national geographical indication product protection.
The Gaoligong International Fine Coffee Cultural Park was developed in accordance with the spirit of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and Government’s directives from the Baoshan on-site meeting, as well as the requirements set forth by the Baoshan Municipal Party Committee and Government and Longyang District Committee and Government to revitalize the entire small-grain coffee industry chain. With an investment of 220 million yuan, the park underwent extensive upgrades to transform the original Nanhut Bai Longtan Scenic Area to A-grade standards. The renovation focused on reshaping the coffee industry, adding new attractions related to coffee production, such as coffee planting areas, coffee culture exhibitions, a waterside coffee paradise, ethnic water-splashing square, coffee experience hall, guesthouses, coffee expert building, coffee tribe, coffee live broadcasting center, Qing memory, tropical fruit luxury camp, Bai Longtan fish observation pond, and coffee cultural ethnic village. This effort aimed to highlight ethnic customs, emphasize specialty industries, and integrate agricultural, cultural, natural, and coffee cultural resources into a cool and livable summer resort and fragrant coffee tourism area.
For coffee enthusiasts, visiting the “First Village of Chinese Coffee” is a must. Located within the global coffee planting belt stretching from latitude 25°N to 30°S on the world map, this belt includes coffee origin Ethiopia, the largest coffee-producing country Brazil, renowned for medium-grain coffee Vietnam, and famous estates like Jade Manor in Vietnam, Blue Mountain in Jamaica, Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia, and Mocha in Yemen.
Baoshan is situated at the northern end of this coffee planting belt. It is bordered by the Gaoligong Mountains, a repository of world species genetics, to the west, and the international river, Lancang Jiang, to the east. The planting area ranges in altitude from 60 to 180 meters, with an average annual temperature of 21.3°C, rainfall of 700-1000 mm, frost-free throughout the year, and a day-night temperature difference of 16°C. Combined with the fertile volcanic ash soil of the Gaoligong Mountains, this environment produces Baoshan Small-grain Coffee known for its unique flavor profile—strong yet not bitter, fragrant yet not intense, with a slight acidity—earning it international acclaim.
Amidst the rugged terrain of the Gaoligong Mountains, amidst the fresh breeze of the wild coffee gardens, tasting the purest coffee flavor, one can witness the life cycle of a coffee bean “from seed to cup.”
