Festival Highlights: The Elephant Festival is a traditional festival of Banlao Township and the world’s only festival dedicated to Asian elephants. On this day, the Wa people create elephant models using bamboo weaving and paper, and conduct rituals of “welcoming, honoring, worshipping, and bidding farewell to the elephants.” They sing and dance, sprinkle holy water on each other to pray for peace and prosperity, and offer sugarcane, corn, and bananas to the wild elephants in the mountains, expressing their reverence for nature and respect for elephants.

The China Wa “Mengnihei” Carnival(摸你黑)

Festival Highlights: The Mengnihei Carnival originates from the Wa tradition of using soot, ox blood, and mud to mark the forehead as a way to ward off evil spirits and seek blessings. During the festival, visitors can join in the fun of applying mud to each other as a form of blessing. Other highlights include the Wa ethnic song and dance performance “Zu Yin Si Gang Li,” the “Ox Soul Sacrifice” ceremony, intangible cultural heritage exhibition and sales, log-dragging, bamboo-fire-making performances, and Wa weaving demonstrations.
