    Mengjiao Dai, Yi, and Lahu Ethnic Township (勐角傣族彝族拉祜族乡) is under the jurisdiction of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County (沧源佤族自治县), Lincang City (临沧市), Yunnan Province (云南省). It is located in the central part of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County, bordering Nuoliang Township (糯良乡) to the east, Mengdong Town (勐董镇) to the south, Banhong Township (班洪乡) to the west, and Donglai Township (动来乡) to the north. The administrative area covers 217.84 square kilometers. As of the end of 2019, the registered population was 14,289.

    In 1945, Mengjiao Town (勐角镇) was established under Cangyuan Administrative Bureau (沧源设治局). In April 1969, it was renamed Hongzhong Commune (红忠公社). In February 1988, it was reorganized as Mengjiao Dai, Yi, and Lahu Ethnic Township. As of June 2020, the township governs 9 administrative villages, with the township government seated in Mengjiao Village (勐角村).

    By 2011, the per capita net income of farmers was 3,621 yuan, and the total fiscal revenue was 1.77 million yuan. By the end of 2019, there were 7 industrial enterprises and 6 general stores or supermarkets with business areas exceeding 50 square meters.

    History

    • Before the establishment of local government, Mengjiao was under the jurisdiction of the Mengjiao Dong Tusi (勐角董土司).
    • In 1891 (the 17th year of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), the Mengjiao Dong Tusi Han Ronggao (罕荣高) was granted hereditary rule, under Zhenbian Office (镇边厅).
    • 1945: Mengjiao Town (勐角镇) was established under Cangyuan Administrative Bureau (沧源设治局).
    • November 1951: Mengjiao District (勐角区) was created.
    • November 1965: Mengdong (勐董) was separated from Mengjiao.
    • June 1968: Mengjiao Commune (勐角公社) was established.
    • April 1969: Renamed Hongzhong Commune (红忠公社).
    • 1971: Restored to Mengjiao Commune (勐角公社), governing 9 brigades.
    • March 1984: Converted to a district, governing 9 small townships.
    • February 1988: Reorganized as Mengjiao Dai, Yi, and Lahu Ethnic Township, with 9 village offices.
    • September 2000: Adjusted to 9 village committees.

    Administrative Divisions

    As of the end of 2011, the township governed 9 administrative villages: Mengjiao (勐角), Lianhuatang (莲花塘), Kongjiao (控角), Nuozhang (糯掌), Kongjing (控井), Menggan (勐甘), Mangong (芒公), Dongka (动卡), and Wengding (翁丁). It had 60 villager groups and 51 natural villages.

    Geographic Environment

    Location

    Mengjiao Dai, Yi, and Lahu Ethnic Township is located in the central part of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County, bordering Nuoliang Township (糯良乡) to the east, Mengdong Town (勐董镇) to the south, Banhong Township (班洪乡) to the west, and Donglai Township (动来乡) to the north. The administrative area covers 217.84 square kilometers.

    Topography

    The terrain is higher in the north and south, and lower in the east and west, forming a landscape of wide middle-cut valleys and deeply incised mountain gorges. The main mountain ranges include Wokan Mountain (窝坎大山), Wenghei Mountain (翁黑山), Kongjiao Mountain (控角山), Manggao Mountain (芒告大山), Kenong Mountain (科弄山), and Mengka Mountain (勐卡山). The highest peak is Wokan Mountain, with an elevation of 2,605 meters, while the lowest point is the confluence of the Xinya River (新牙河) and Banhong (班洪), with an elevation of 680 meters.

    Climate

    The township has a subtropical monsoon climate, featuring a three-dimensional climate and mild weather. The multi-year average temperature is 18.5°C, with a January average of 12°C. The average annual rainfall is 1,602.1 millimeters, mainly concentrated from May to October, with July and August receiving the most rainfall.

    Hydrology

    Major rivers in the township include Dongdong River (动董河), Nanwang River (南旺河), Nanjiao River (南角河), and Xinya River (新牙河). The largest is the Nanjiao River (南角河), which originates from the back mountain of Wengding (翁丁), flows through Kongjiao Village (控角村) and Mengjiao Dam (勐角坝), and joins the Mengdong River (勐董河). It is 15 kilometers long, with a drainage area of 80 square kilometers and a total runoff of 20 million cubic meters.

    Natural Resources

    As of 2011, Mengjiao Dai, Yi, and Lahu Ethnic Township had 35,000 mu of arable land, with a forest coverage rate of 71%.

    Population

    As of the end of 2011, the total population was 14,178, with 7,228 males (50.98%) and 6,950 females (49.02%). The population was mainly Va (佤族), with 8,454 people (59.63%), followed by Dai (傣族) with 3,016 (21.27%), Yi (彝族) with 1,179 (8.32%), Lahu (拉祜族) with 919 (6.48%), and Han (汉族) with 554 (3.9%).
