Day 1 Xishuangbanna-Chiang Rai

Meet at Jinghong airport and head for Chiang Rai. Upon your arrival in Chiang Rai, your local tour guide will wait you in the arrival hall and your driver will standby. Then transfer to the hotel for to check in and attend the welcome banquet hosted by the hotel.

Day 2 Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai

After breakfast, drive to visit the Ran-Tong Save & Rescue Elephant Centre which is devoted to rescuing abused elephants from all over Thailand and surrounding countries. Every elephant rescued is brought to the Chiang Mai elephant camp and cared for with great passion and enthusiasm. The centre is different from many other camps there, it won’t train the elephant to draw pitures for money, it won’t separate the baby elephants from their mothers, etc. However, it is a save and rescue center with many volunteers. You can be one of them, learning to feed and bath them.

After the lunch and a short break, pay a visit to one of northern Thailand’s most sacred temples-Wat Phra That Doi Suthep(双龙寺), it is the one that crowns the Doi Suthep mountain on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai, is definitely something that shouldn’t be missed.

Then, drive to a Thai cooking school where you can learn some Thai cooking skills and at the same time, taste kinds of delicious Thai food. After that, drive back to your hotel for rest.

Day 4 Chiang Mai

After breakfast, drive to the biggest changwat of Thailand-Chiang Rai. On the way, pay a visit to the Erawan Shrine(四面佛) and enjoy foot bath in Manixin Hot Spring(马尼信温泉). Then drive to visit the White Temple(白庙)and the Black House(黑屋). Dubbed the ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ of architecture, the White Temple and the Black House will conjure a clashing of emotions. One dark, mysterious and almost sadistic, the other white, ethereal and other-worldly, these two opposing buildings couldn’t be more different. And the strangest thing about the two is that the White Temple was built by the student of the architect who built the Black House Temple.

Day 6 Chiang Rai-Mengla County

In the morning, drive to Chiang Khong, on the way, pay a visit to the landark of the Golden Triangle–the Golden Triangle Archway(金三角牌坊) and also the Giant Buddha(金三角大佛). Later, you can take a boat to visit the Golden Triangle(150￥/person on self expense), pay a visit to the Opium Museum(鸦片博物馆) to know more about opium, including the produce, process, transport and sales circumstances.

Then, drive to Houayxay to transact the departure formalities. Afterwards, drive to Mengla through Mohan port. Check in Hejin Hotel for rest.

In the morning, drive to visit Wantianshu Scenic Spot. It is the only oasis at 21 degrees north latitude, and has been recognized internationally as China’s unique tropical rainforest. An Air Corridor (Kong Zhong Zou Lang), 2500 meters long and 36 meters high, has been built on the high canopies. It remains a challenge to both visitors and scientists.

Bada Rice Terraces is the most spectacular site in Yuanyang Terraced Fields. The roads is paved with slabstone, which is easy for walking. Day 2 Kunming-Dali by High Speed Train

In the morning, drive 1.5hrs to Shilin County. After arrival, you will have a tour of Stone Forest which is one of the largest plantations of rapeseed flowers in Southwest China. Combined with a unique terrain dominated by karst features with small basins among mountain ranges, the place boasts very unique landscape features.

Continue the driving to Xiangzhuqing village in Xiaowan township of Fengqing County. In the late afternoon, pay a visit to Xiangzhuqing Acient Tea Trees（香竹箐古茶树）.In Xiangzhuqing village, lies a massive, ancient tree. Colloquially referred to as the Mother tea tree, this magnificent giant is about 35 feet tall (which is extremely tall for a tea tree), and is so wide that it’s said that it takes eight people holding outstretched hands to full surround the tree. Besides her gargantuan size, this tree is also remarkable for its unmatched history. This ancient tree is recorded as being over 3,200 years old, it is called “the Mother of Tea Trees”. Now, it is protected and fenced by the local government.

After breakfast, pay a visit to the Three Pagodas in Chongshen Monastery which has a history of over 1,800 years located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain facing to the Erhai Lake. Three Pagodas are made of three ancient independent pagodas forming a symmetrical triangle.

Afterwards, drive 2.5hrs to Lijiang with the driver. After meeting with your guide in Lijiang. Visit the Black Dragon Pond (Located at the foot of the Xiangshan Mountain (Elephant Hill) north of the city of Lijiang. As the water here is a lucid green color, it gained another name Jade Spring Park (Yuquan Park). There are many distinctive and ravishing sites in the park. Hiding in the lush trees or standing along the liquid pool is the antique and exquisite architectural pieces, which are in the style of Naxi.) and Dongbu Culture Museum nearby. Finally explore Lijiang Old Town. Lijiang Old Town has a history more than 800 years; it was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997. Here you will see the wonderful wooden architecture of Naxi ethnic people.

In the morning, drive about 30KM to Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M), you will take the sightseeing bus for a short visiting through the Baishuihe River. Take the chairlift up to visit Spruce Meadow of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. After lunch, you will enjoy the Impression Lijang Ethnic Show (regular seat ) directed in Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M). A cultural show demonstrating the traditions and lifestyles of the Naxi, Yi and Bai peoples of the area. The show takes place inside Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park at 3500m in an outdoor theater specifically designed to showcase the mountain which is used as a backdrop. The production itself was designed by Zhang Yimou, Fan Yue and Wang Chaoge, a cast of over 500 people, and a number of horses.

In the afternoon, you’ll stroll through Baisha Village, which is an enchanting traditional Yunnan village. Visit Baisha Murals about 600 years old, which is one part of the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997.

The hike begins at the top of Heyang Village at an elevation of approximately 2000 metres. Start hiking to Yudai Road (1.5 hour) for a rest. On the way, you willl pass through wild tea gardens and meet many pine trees. Go on hikinng till at 12:30 pm, have a good rest and have your lunch in a pavilion. In the morning, drive in the west to Menghai, a small town surrounded by rice fields and vegetable plantations, first see a very lively and noisy market, where local people buy all kinds of stuff everyday, meat, fresh vegetable, chicken, fish, fruits and various native produces ethnic people brought from mountains. Continue driving on mountainous road to Bada, a small town on China-Burma border surrounded by several Aini villages, further to trail head, start hiking down mountains, for the first section it’s walking mainly along a village road with farm land on both sides, sugar, upland rice, hemp or tea, then across dense forest to Manwa, a Bulang Village on hillside, where we are going to stay with local ethnic family for night. Today’s hiking is around 2-3 hours.

Wake up in the morning noise of villagers leaving for farm work, pigs grunting for food, roosters singing around, after simple breakfast, say bye to friendly host family and continue our expedition. Today’s hiking is somewhat tough, start with a long and pretty steep descent to the bottom of valley, then follow with a long and steep ascent, fortunately there is always shade dense forest cast over our heads. Arrive at Zhanglang, an old village of Bulang people, pretty isolated and very traditional, after this village we will do another down and up across farmland, small river, forest and several ethnic villages to Xiding, a small town perched on top of mountain, the end of our trial. Drive back to Jinghong. (Hiking can also stop near Zhanglang, get picked and drive back to Jinghong).

Nannuo Tea Mountain in Menghai County, XishuangBanna

Drive to Mount. Nannuo, a place in the middle of way from Jinghong to Menghai, famous for tea of very good quality, as well a traditional inhabitancy area of Aini people, local Aini is good at tea planting and production, big number of ancient tea trees aged several hundred years are scattered around, and still bearing buds to benefit villagers. Start hiking from foot of the mountain, with some ascent first, then flat and slow descent, walk takes 3-4 hours in total and is not very tough. Moving along small trail or tractor road across villages and ancient tea plantations, we can enjoy refreshing air in forest, listen to singing of birds and chirps of insects in nature, explore Aini people’s simple and traditional life, if like, enter their wooden house built on stilts and have a short chat with them over a cup of most organic homegrown green tea. Return highway, drive back to Jingong.

Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna

In the morning, drive in the west to Menghai, a small town surrounded by rice fields and vegetable gardens, first see a lively and noisy market, where local people buy all kinds of stuff everyday, meat, fresh vegetable, chicken, fish, fruits and various native produces ethnic people brought from mountains. Further move to Menghun, visit village of Bulang people, the third largest ethnic group of Xishuangbanna, they are farmers mainly engaged in planting tea and sugar cane, as well loyal Theravada Buddhists. After visit a village of Dai, where villagers are still making paper with tree bark traditional way, it was used a lot in the past to record Buddhism sutras by monks, now mostly adopted by businessmen for packing tea product.

Continue driving to Jingzhen to see Octagonal Pavilion, a meeting hall of senior monks originally built 300 years ago, one of 3 most famous Theravada Buddhism buildings of province.Then, pay a visit to village of Aini people near Mount. Day 1 Jinghong-Damenglong-Menghun

In the morning, drive in the south to Da Menglong, a small town close to Myanmar border, first see White Stupa, the most famous Theravada Buddhism Building of China aged over 800 years, symbol of Xishuangbanna. Drop in village of Dai and their temple. This area is still free from influence of big number of tourists, so peaceful and traditional. Further drive across basin of Da Menglong, up a long river valley to Bulang Shan, this area is close to Myanmar border, and inhabited mainly by ethnic groups, on the way we will visit Lahu nationality, who used to be a part of ancient nomadic tribe – Chiang, they stay out-of-the-way and still follow very traditional way of life. Continue driving across forest and along river valley from Bulang Shan to Menghun. Bulang Shan is the most original residential area of Bulang people, many of their traditional villages are situated along the road, we will stop randomly and walk into their village even their houses built on stilts to find out how their traditional life is going on, in addition short visit will also be paid to village of Ake people, with different language and costume, they used to be an unidentified ethnic group, now classified as a small branch of Hani. Stay at simple hotel in Menghun.

Day 2 Menghun-Menghai-Jinghong

In the morning, visit a village of Dai, where villagers are making paper with tree bark traditional way, their production looks primitive, and product’s rough, but because it’s firm and durable, was used a lot in the past to record Buddhism sutras by monks, nowadays adopted a lot by businessmen for packing local produce, tea for example, hence the technology is still living. Continue driving to Jingzhen to see Octagonal Pavilion, a meeting hall of senior monks originally built 300 years ago, one of 3 most famous Theravada Buddhism buildings of province, original construction was destroyed during Culture Revolution, existing one is a restoration in 1978. Near Menghai, drop in village of Muslim Dai, an exception from normal Dai ethnic group, they speak the same language as others, but following the traditions and taboos of Moslemism, in the center of their village, we see mosque instead of Buddhism temple. On the way back, visit Aini village near Mount. Nan Nuo, a place reputed for tea of good quality, local Aini is good at tea planting and production, big number of ancient tea trees aged several hundred years are scattered around, and still bearing buds to benefit villagers. Return Jinghong and tour ends.

In the morning, cycle along the Mekong to Ganlanba, a traditional Dai inhabitancy region, enjoy view along the river on the way, in Ganlanaba, cycle around in the countryside across rice fields, banana plantation and vegetable garden to visit villages and temples, the area is pretty flat, most roads are paved, villages are close to each other, villagers are open and friendly, so cycling may be very relaxing. In the late afternoon, we will stop in some villages and stay for night in stilted house with a local family.

Day 2 Ganlanba-Jinghong

Get up in morning singing of roosters, have a simple breakfast in village, say bye to hospitable villagers, continue cycling for some section back to Ganlanba Town, see a lively daily local market of Dai people, village women are industrious, they bring to the market every morning their native produces to support the daily consumption of town people. Later we take ferry across the Mekong to the other side, continue cycling across rubber plantation, more villages of Dai to highway, along which we return Jinghong.

Travel Tips:

If time is limited and cycling is too much for you, one-day trip can be organized, too. Cycling to Ganlanba along the Mekong, tour around to explore villages and temples, on late afternoon manage to get bikes on a pick-up or tricycle, return Jinghong (to cycle back is fine if would like, but back journey may turn a little boring and tiring).
If want to experience more, have your bikes loaded on boat, take a relaxing cruise down the Mekong to Ganlanba instead of cycling there, your trip would be more changeable and interesting. Or do this in reverse, cycle to Ganlanba along road in the morning and in the afternoon take a relaxing boat cruise back to Jinghong town.
To rent bikes in Ganlanba is possible, too, but not at professional shop, a bike repairer is doing this business with some old bikes collected in countryside, not performing well, so this is only an option, not very recommended.
