In the morning, drive along the Mekong River to Ganlanba, a traditional Dai inhabitancy region, enjoy the views along the river, in Ganlanaba, see a lively daily local market of Dai people first, then drive off main road into countryside to visit village and temple to find out the life and culture facts of Dai people, the dominant ethnic group of the region, if like, enter their house built on stilts and have a chat with them. Further move in the east to Menglun, where the biggest Tropical Botanical Garden of China is situated, which holds more than 3000 species, enjoy nice scenery in the garden and learn about some interesting plants, short walk in rainforest zone, the most natural part of garden is especially recommended, tourists seldom go there, very quiet and original, for simple knowledge about rainforest, the most bio-diversified vegetation type in the world, it’s a good place. Return to Jinghong on the different way, mountainous but scenic, across rainforest, if time permits, drop in village of Jinuo, the last ethnic group classified by Chinese government in 1979, with population of only 20 thousand, they uniquely belong to this region.
The Yiwu Tea Planting Area is located in the Yiwu Township of Mengla County. By the end of the Qing dynasty, large numbers of Han merchants arrived in Yiwu and began growing tea. During the 1920’s, Yunnan’s earliest tea industry testing ground at Nannuo Mountain was established. The area contains vast tea growing areas and possesses a long history of growing tea.It is also the oldest test-bed of industrialization in Xishuangbanna.

Starting from Jinghong, drive to Mount Nannuo, see ancient tea plantation aged over 800 years of Aini people, who have been engaged in tea-planting here for centuries, visit their village and taste roasted tea they prepared in unique way, through chat we may discover how much Aini people rely on tea. Move on to Menghai, pay visit to small tea workshop in the village to learn about how fresh tea leaves are processed. Further transfer into mountainous area to Bada, do some hiking across forest to worship the King of Wild Tea Tree aged over 1700 years. In late afternoon drive all the way back to Jinghong. Go along the Mekong to Ganlanba, a major residential area of Dai People, see a lively daily market where local people sell or buy food and other native products. Drive to Yiwu, a small town once boomed due to tea trade in the history, see the old part of town and the stele erected in Qing Dynasty that recorded the trade situation at that time, pay visit to local families that are still producing Pu’er Tea the traditional way. Back to Menglun, visit the biggest Tropical Botanical Garden of China, enjoy the nice view and quietness in garden. Stay at hotel in the garden.

Elephants, as the symbol of good luck, is a treasure animal for Dai people. 50km away from Jinghong downtown area, the Wild Elephant Valley is at the south of Mangyang Natural Scenic Spots. This place is open for all travellers, especially for those who love nature, wild animals and photographing. This park is famous for numerous wild elephants roaming about in the virgin forests. Start from Jinghong at noon time, drive to Wild Elephant Valley at the edge of nature reserve specially zoned for forest and wild lives conservation, which is the residence of approximately 60 wild Asian elephants. Wild Elephant Valley has two entrances, we choose to start sightseeing from the further one, first along well paved path do a soft hiking for around 1 hour across rainforest, then take cable lift above jungle for around half hour to enjoy rainforest view from air, this ride is the most relaxing and refreshing part of sightseeing, it will take us out of wildness to the front entrance of park, where we are going to spend half an hour watching a small elephant domesticating show. When park tour finishes, we drive to Youle Area to visit village of Jinuo people, the last ethnic nationality classified by Chinese government in 1979.Afterwards, return to Jinghong.

Start in the morning from Jinghong. Drive in a valley across vast rubber plantation to Dongfeng, a small town inhabited by mostly Han immigrants from inland of China in 1960s, they are descendants of inaugurators who created big state-owned rubber plantation for country. See a local market here, brand new buildings around make it difficult for you to imagine how it looked 50 years ago, wildness, rainforest, dangerous animals, malaria. Continue the drive along the edge of basin to Manfeilong Village, behind which on top of hill perched the famous White Stupas. Built in 1204, it’s the oldest building of Xishuangbanna, as well one of the most famous Theravada Buildings of China, whole construction looks like a group of growing bamboo shoots. Later explore villages of Dai, tourists seldom visit this region, so local life and culture still go in traditional way, although with the profit from private rubber plantations, most villagers have moved in modern concrete villas. Return Jinghong in the afternoon.
You will find extraordinary sceneries in Jiaozi Snow Mountain including many beautiful lakes such as the Heavenly Pond, the Mubang Lake, the Spirit Pond, the Heavenly Pond at Green Valley, the Heroes’ Pond, and the Palanquin Curtain Lake, etc. Glacier erosion contributed a lot to the formation of these lakes. A legend has it that there is a dragon deep in one of the lakes, so, people should not roar near the lake, not to mention throwing stones into it. Otherwise, the dragon will become angry, which might lead to thunderstorm or hail. This legend adds more beauty and mystery to the Jiaozi Snow Mountain.

Set off to Jiaozi Snow Mountain at around 07:00am. After arrival, take a cableway to visit Jiaozi Snow Mountain, do some hiking to visit the summit of Jiaozi Mountain.
Today you will trek to the top with nice flower and trees. Jiaozi Snow Mountain is well-known as the First Mountain in the middle of Yunnan. Jiaozi Snow Mountain or Sedan Chair Snow Mountain is l88km away from Kunming. Looking from a long distance, the snow mountain looks like a sedan chair placed in the millions of flowers, hence the name Sedan Chair Snow Mountain. As the best snow view in the low latitude of Southeast Asia, Mt. Jiaozi, rising 4223m above sea level, is a beautiful scenic spot.

This morning, get up in the morning and drive to Jiaozi Snow Mountain. Take the shuttle bus to the foot of the mountain. Then take the cable car to Daheiqing. You will start your trekking now. You will pass through wood forest and azalea flowers sea during your trekking. Finally Climb to 4100 meters of the Jiaozi Snow Mountain, you will find the Heaven Lake (4100m). It is the highest lake in the central Yunnan Province, also the source of the rivers in Luquan County. Then you will trek down by passing through “Thin Strip of Sky”.
Afterwards, drive from Jiaozi Snow Mountain to Zhuanlong Town to have dinner and then transfer back to Kunming. Service ends.

Start from Jinghong in the Morning, drive to Menghun, see multi-ethnic Sunday Market. Many ethnic minorities living around, Dai, Lahu, Aini, Bulang, Ake and Wa gather weekly for exchange of native produces purchase of daily commodities, different costumes and odd rural merchandises make the market colorful and interesting. Later we will visit a village of Dai, where villagers are still making paper with tree bark traditional way, which was used a lot in the past to record Buddhism sutras by monks, now mostly adopted by businessmen for packing tea product. In the afternoon, drive further to Menglian via Lancang, random stops on the way to see villages, visit ethnic people or for stretch. Overnight in Menglian.

Today we will visit an Aini market in a small town close to Burmese border, around which many villages of Hani are situated, Hani is an international ethnic group, reside not only in southern Yunnan of China, but also in Burma, Thailand and Vietnam, with quite many branches, they speak and dress pretty differently. We will see mostly a branch name Akha here, quite many Akha women in traditional costumes and headdresses would gather with an assembly of both home-grown things and collection from wildness, they are busy and noisy, making the small market lively, colorful and exotic. After market we will spend rest time of day to visit some ethnic villages around, different minorities stay together in this area harmoniously. Overnight in Menglian.

Drive to Wa people’s area on top of mountain to see another market today. Wa, originated from ancient Pu, the same ancestor of Bulang, with a total population of 35 thousand, they live mostly in southwestern areas along Burmese border. In the market women play always the most active roles, so is Wa, wearing big earrings and red-topped hats, they are busy moving around searching for merchandises while smoking pipes, or sitting together at a corner and chatting happily with each other. After the market we will visit some ethnic villages, see a museum about Dai people based on an old government building complex constructed around 100 years ago, Dai used to be the local ruler, museum will tell us some about their history. Overnight in Menglian.

This is the market day of Menglian. We first see a small Dai nationality market by a small river, where Dai women sell all kinds of home-made food and home-grown vegetable, other ethnic people like Wa, Aini and Lahu are also mixed among them to make the occasion colorful. Then we move to central market of town, a bigger venue, more crowded, more lively and more various in merchandise, it’s filled with mostly city people, but at certain corner many Aini peddlers in their traditional costumes and headdresses are definitely the most eye-catching part. In the afternoon we drive back to Mengzhe via Lancang, random stops will be made en route to see villages, visit ethnic people or for stretch. Overnight in Mengzhe.

Today is Thursday, we are going to visit Xiding, a small town perched on top of mountain, to see the Thursday Market of Aini and Bulang people. It’s a weekly bustling occasion for ethnic people living around, to sell native produces, to buy daily commodities, to meet friends or to enjoy a little relaxation from tiring farm work. After market we will visit villages of Aini and Bulang, two main ethnic groups of the region, to find out the facts about their traditional life and culture, due to remote locations, quite many conventional things are still well maintained in their communities, language, dwelling, living, religion, etc., may not be decent, but absolutely authentic. In the afternoon we drive back to Jinghong. Ethnic market tour ends.

The Ganlanba Basin, known as “the Plume of the Peacock”, is located 34 kilometers southeast of Jinghong City. Metaphorically speaking, if Xishuangbanna is a green peacock, then the Ganlanba Basin is the tail of the peacock. With green trees all the year round and bamboo houses scattered around, the place is very attractive. In this tour, you will hike through tropical rainforst and rubber plantations to visit several ethnic villages, living with them to fully appreciate their daily lives and colorful ethnic cultures.

At 8:30 AM, we take a minibus to Galanba. The drive takes approximately 1 and a half hours. Our destination is a medium-sized Aini village. From there it’s a beautiful 4 hours walk along a small trail in rubber plantation and nice rainforest to an small Aini village inhabited by only 30 families. The first night we will rest in the traditional home of a very hospitable Aini people’s family.

We face uphill and downhill 5 or 6 hours walks through dense jungles, rubber plantations, Mekong River and mountain rice fields. The night of the 2nd day will be spent in a hillside Aini people’s village that offers ravishingly beautiful views down into misty valleys. Before reaching our overnight destination we will have 1 hour going down hill in rubber plantation, 1 hour walking along Mekong river, 30 minutes boat trip on Mekong river by ferry boat and then walk up hills for 1 hour and 2 hours walking in the dense jungles.

An easy 3 hours walk downhill to a Dai village. We will have lunch in a Dai people ‘s restaurant. Our journey ends with a 1 hour drive by public bus back to Jinghong.

Walking through the tropical forest along the flagstone trail side by side to a murmuring stream that is known for its therapeutic water. Having lunch at a remote Yao village, then walking back to where we started our trek. From there its one hour by bus to reach a picturesque Dai village where we stay overnight in a private home. There is a solar shower and a toilet available. Enjoy the tasty Dai cuisine with the fantastic view of the Nanla river!

Hike in Wangtianshu Scenic Spot including the Air Corridor, a spectacular nature reserve near Mengla. Transfer back to Jinghong in the afternoon.
Xishuangbanna is one of the Yunnan endpoints of the Ancient Tea Horse Road and is still a major tea-growing area. From there, pressed tea was carried by horseback to Tibet, India, and Nepal. The tropical forested hills of Xishuangbanna are where the Dai people produce some of the best Pu’er tea, which is pressed into a variety of wheels, bricks, etc. Pu’er, the next major stop after Xishuangbanna, was where tea was traded and it gave its name to this famous type of dark pressed tea, although most prefectures in Yunnan, including Xishuangbanna, produce Pu’er tea.

In the morning drive in the north to Jingmai, see the ancient tea plantation aged over 800 years. It was cultivated by Pu, the ancestor of Bulang Nationality today. Pu was the earliest ethnic group who began to domesticate wild tea plant for drinking in Yunnan. In the area thousands of aged tea trees in wildness are still lush and producing buds, for long term plantation is under natural state without farmer’s taking care. The output is low, but very organic and with pretty high quality. In the afternoon long drive to Shangyun via Lancang. Stay in Shangyun, at simple local hotel or guesthouse.

Drive up mountain to Banwei, a small village lying on hillside with an elevation of around 1900 meters. We will see a tea tree aged over 1000 years here, different from the King of Wild Tea Tree and 800-year-old tea trees in ancient plantation, this is a breed between wild and domesticated, with obvious features of the both, it’s taken as a very important evidence improving that local ethnic groups tried to plant wild tea for drinking as early as 1000 years ago. In the afternoon transfer back to Lancang, en route if have more time, do some random stops for visiting ethnic villages. Stay in Lancang.

Move to Pu’er along mountainous road and across the upriver Mekong. After arrival in the afternoon, drive to see the ancient tea caravan way that still winds its way on ridges of mountains, of which the paving stones are still telling people the former prosperity of tea trade along this trail, pay a visit to ethnic village around and family who used to run hostel specially for tea transporting caravans to discover some stories about tea trade in the past. Further to Ninger, a small town after which famous Pu’er Tea was named, it once was the tea distribution center of South Yunnan. Return Pu’er for stay.

Driving in the north to Mohe, see old Mohe Town, a former stop on the Ancient Tea Caravan Way, caravans transporting tea out of this region couldn’t move fast due to poor traffic conditions in the past, so there would be places for rest or stay around every 30 km, Mohe used to be such a spot, and some local people are descendants of former hostel owners, we will try chatting with aged people for stories about tea caravans.
After that a long drive via Zhenyuan to Jiujia, a small town perched on top of mountains often enveloped by thick fog, which is the edge of Ailao Mount Nature Reserve. Stay at simple local guesthouses.

Set out in early morning for Qianjia Zhai in the deep part of Ailao Mountain Nature reserve, with an elevation of over 2000 meters and covered with dense subtropical forest. Road leading to the foot of mountain is small and narrow, we may take tractors or local truck for this transfer if needed, bumpy ride is followed by some hard hiking up steep mountain and across rivers and lush forest, we finally arrive at Qianjia Zhai to worship the oldest wild tea tree currently found in the world, which is reportedly aged over 2700 years. In the afternoon we do same hard trip back to Jiujia. Stay at local guesthouses.

After recovering from tiredness of long walk on previous day, take long drive from Jiujia back to Pu’er. Pu’er used to be named Simao, with population of over 2.3 million, area of over 44 thousand square km, which is the biggest prefecture of province. Pu’er was an important stop on former Tea Caravan Way, as well one of the most significant producing areas of famous Pu’er tea. Preferential climate endows Pu’er ideal conditions for planting tea, tea plantation in prefecture is over 30 thousand hectares and annual output hits 15 thousand tons. Stay in Pu’er.

Visit Tea Culture Park near Pu’er, see how tea is processed and taste Pu’er Tea. Pu’er Tea is actually a kind of green tea, the difference is it’s slightly fermented, naturally through store of certain term, normally 7-8 years, or artificially by certain technology, fermentation makes it taste milder and softer, so well accepted by most people. Later get on the way back to Jingong. Stop en route to enjoy view of vast tea plantation near Dadugan, another famous tea producing area. In addition drop in Wild Elephant Valley, take cable lift above jungle for forest view and some relaxation. Stay in Jinghong.

Go along the Mekong to Ganlanba, a major residential area of Dai People, see a lively daily market where local people sell or buy food and other native products. Drive to Yiwu, a small town once boomed due to tea trade in the history, see the old part of town and the stele erected in Qing Dynasty that recorded the trade situation at that time, pay a visit to local families that are still producing Pu’er Tea in the traditional way.

Drive to Menglun, visit the biggest tropical botanical garden of China, enjoy the nice view and quietness in garden. Stay at hotel in the garden. Enjoy morning freshness in the botanical garden, have a relaxing walk in natural zone for a short experience, learn the great bio-diversity of rainforest, later leave botanical garden for Jinuo Mountain Area, visit Jinuo People, who uniquely belongs to this region, is the last ethnic nationality classified by Chinese Government in 1979. See the ancient tea plantations around Jinuo village, which used to be one of Six Great Tea Mountains reputed as the cradles of famous Pu’er Tea, try Wrap-charcoaled Tea and Salad Tea Jinuo people prepare in their traditional way. Back to Jinghong.

Xishuangbanna is one of the Yunnan endpoints of the Ancient Tea Horse Road and is still a major tea-growing area. From there, pressed tea was carried by horseback to Tibet, India, and Nepal. The tropical forested hills of Xishuangbanna are where the Dai people produce some of the best Pu’er tea, which is pressed into a variety of wheels, bricks, etc.
Pu’er, the next major stop after Xishuangbanna, was where tea was traded and it gave its name to this famous type of dark pressed tea, although most prefectures in Yunnan, including Xishuangbanna, produce Pu’er tea. Pu’er tea should be tried as it is different to the generally delicate flavors of Chinese tea. It has a rustic woody taste, and is soothing and reminiscent of a minority culture.

After breakfast, go to study tea with Mr.Zhang at his tea shop at 9:00 am. He is graduated from Anhui Agriculture University and his major is Tea, who was born in Menghai, a family with tea business and still running the tea business in Jinghong. We will get the general and basic knowledge about Pu’er tea from him.

Drive to Mengwang Tea Factory and have lunch in the tea factory. The owner of tea factory will show us about his tea plantation and we could picking up tea with his workers. The Factory is right in the middle of huge tea terraces, which is close to forest and also there are some coffee plantation and factory. (This private tea factory has about 2000MU tea plantation and 300MU coffee plantation, 15Mu=1 hectare). We will drive about 1 hour to Pu’er, stay in Pu’er.

At 8:00 am, we are going to trekking along the ancient tea horse road, 12 kilometer from Pu’er to Nakeli, a very important tea treading station since Tang dynasty. After lunch we will drive back to Pu’er and study more about Pu’er tea with locals and visit tea market.

Visit the start point of Tea Horse Road and 6 Ancient Tea Mountain Museum, Yiwu old tea street. After lunch we are going to make our own Pu’er cake. If you want take away the tea cake you make it, you need pay extra. The price depends on the tea you choose.
